Optimal methods for estimating kinetic isotope effects from different forms of the Rayleigh distillation equation

چکیده
The interpretation of stable isotope values hinges on precise, accurate estimates of kinetic isotope effects ( ), which are equal to k/k, where k and k are the reaction rate constants for the two isotopes. Kinetic isotope effects are commonly determined by monitoring the reactant concentration (C) and isotope ratio (R) relative to their initial values (C1 and R1, respectively). Values of are estimated from the C and R values by using the Rayleigh distillation equation (RDE).

The application of stable isotopes in speleothem records requires an understanding of the extent to which speleothem calcite isotopic compositions refl ect the compositions of the cave waters from which they precipitate. To test for equilibrium precipitation, modern speleothem calcite was grown on glass plates, so that the carbon and oxygen isotope composition of the calcite and the water from ...

[1] Using a simple 3-box model of the ocean-atmosphere system, we simulate the cycling of carbon and strontium in the aftermath of a global glaciation. Model simulations include the delivery of alkalinity to seawater from intense carbonate and silicate weathering under high pCO2 conditions as well as ocean mixing, air-sea gas exchange, and biological productivity. The dC of the first carbonate ...
متن کاملIsotopic fractionation of carbon and nitrogen during the illicit processing of cocaine and heroin in South America.
The forensic application of stable isotope analysis to cocaine and heroin for geolocation of exhibits must take into account the possible enrichment and/or depletion of 13C and 15N during the illicit manufacturing process. Continuous-flow elemental analysis-isotope ratio mass spectrometry was utilized to measure changes in the stable isotope ratios of carbon and nitrogen for both cocaine (N = 9...

Applications of speleothem calcite geochemistry in climate change studies require the evaluation of the accuracy and sensitivity of speleothem proxies to correctly infer paleoclimatic information. The present study of Harrison’s Cave, Barbados, uses the analysis of the modern climatology and groundwater system to evaluate controls on the C and O isotopic composition of modern speleothems. This ...
متن کاملComparison of different empirical methods for estimating ddaily reference evapotranspiration in the humid cold climate (case study: Borujen, Shahrekord, Koohrang and Lordegan)
The proposed method for calculation of potential evapotranspiration is Penman-Monteith FAO method, but there are other methods that require less meteorological data but estimates close to the FAO Penman-Monteith method in different climatic conditions. Performance evaluation of these methods on the same basis is prerequisite for selecting an alternative approach in accordance with available da...
